MBTA Symphony Station
Accessibility Improvements Project
DHK Architects, Inc., in collaboration with the MBTA Green Line Transformation team, and the Thornton Tomasetti design team, is working on a comprehensive package of accessibility and modernization improvements to Symphony Station that will put this Green Line facility on a par with the MBTA’s other central stations. Despite its strategic location on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Huntington Avenue next to Symphony Hall, Horticultural Hall and the Christian Science Center, it remains one of Boston’s City Core stations that are not fully accessible.
The design and execution of this project is a complex, demanding undertaking given the need to integrate the station’s vertical and horizontal pedestrian circulation with the existing public street infrastructure as well as the adjacent institutional and commercial buildings.
The scope of this project includes four new elevators from street to platform level, new code-compliant emergency exit stairs and new accessible restrooms. To make the station accessible, the scope of work includes raising the platform to accommodate low-floor cars and replacing or improving existing stairs as well as making overall station updates and improvements.
Specifically, within the scope, DHK is designing the new station headhouses in order to build more concise, modern headhouses that contrast with surrounding architectural context in a modest way, and more transparent and conspicuous headhouses that perform better for wayfinding.
