This project exemplifies DHK’s unique experience with large, state of the art train maintenance facilities. The 380,000 SF building was a phased reconstruction of the MBTA’s Northside facility, formerly known as the Boston Engine Terminal. The facility provides routine maintenance for all the train sets run on the MBTA’s Northside commuter rail routes and periodic heavy maintenance to the entire commuter rail system.
As the headquarters for the MBTA Commuter Rail Department, the complex included 80,000 SF of second-level administrative space and employee facilities containing offices, conference rooms, cafeteria and lunch rooms, lockers and showers, training facilities and support spaces. Part of the scope of work consisted of coordination and sequencing of construction with ongoing operations.
The Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility was awarded the Engineering Excellence Honor Award by the American Consulting Engineers Council of New England.
