This project presented a landmark opportunity to accommodate student housing and affordable housing on public land through a unique partnership. The development contains apartments to accommodate 610 student beds in two 6-story structures plus 60 affordable townhouses that were sold as condominiums to neighborhood residents. The final design scheme was the result of intense negotiations with community activists, elected officials, the BRA, and the Boston Civic Design Commission.
The site planning reinforces a strong existing urban grid, locating the taller structures (the student component) on the north end of the site closer to Northeastern University and the 4-story affordable housing component on the southern end of the site.
