The San Fernando Public Housing is a 334-unit residential complex located in the Monacillos ward of the Rio Piedras section of San Juan. The site, approximately 25 acres in area, is occupied by 20 residential structures, ranging in height from 1 to four stories, with a mix of unit types which includes a variety of flats and townhouses. The project, originally built in 1971, will undergo a complete renovation with this project. This includes four new streets that will interconnect the different areas of the site and will provide street frontage and parking for all the units. The main feature of the design is a pedestrian walk that provides a central pedestrian connection running from one end of the project to the other, in an east-west direction, passing through the centrally located Community Building. All the units will be fitted with new terrazzo tile floors, new bathrooms and kitchens, new doors and windows, and new utilities. The entire site will be renovated, new utilities will be provided and a very comprehensive landscaping plan, which includes new playground areas, will further enhance the existing, mature vegetation. The community facilities will be renovated and expanded, and the Head Start will be reconstructed and also expanded to provide one additional activity room.
