The original scope of this project was to replace an existing piped-in steam heating system with a new heating plant in a 1931 courthouse. However, the introduction of the boiler plant triggered additional requirements for life-safety and accessibility improvements in order to bring the building into conformance with code. Several key issues included the implementation of fire separation and other life safety, studying and proposing methods for full accessibility at all courthouse entrances and phasing the work to occur outside of court hours. Other work included securing fire rated storefronts to enclose the stairwell without impacting the sightlines and the general visibility in the atrium.
