This project involved the urban planning and design of a new heavy-rail transit system for the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. This new commuter rail system traverses nearly 11 miles within the dense urban core of Greater San Juan and includes the design and siting of 14 signature train stations. The stations included elevated, below grade and subway-type construction. DHK was an integral member of the general management consultant team and was in charge of the urban design aspects of the project. As part of this team, DHK was responsible for establishing urban design guidelines for the line segments and station areas and the development of design and rezoning guidelines for Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in the designated joint development sites along the transit corridor.
